This is a full stock percussion long rifle that was retailed by Smith, Rhodes & Company of Richmond, Virginia. This rifle measures 63 1/4" in length with a 46 1/4" octagon barrel. The barrel has an untouched dark plum patina with light pitting and surface rust present and is retained by iron pins and a single tang screw. The bore is .50 caliber and is dark, but is not pitted and shows very strong rifling. The rear buck horn style sight is forged onto the barrel 14 1/2" forward of the breech. The front sight is a brass blade design dovetailed into the barrel. There are initials engraved into the top barrel flat that look to be T B * J P. The barrel has not been removed from the stock to check for any stamps on the bottom. The three brass ramrod thimbles are securely attached to the stock using iron pins. The lock plate is marked with SMITH, RHODES & Co./RICHMOND, Va. along with two lines on the perimeter of the lock. The mechanics of the lock do not work. The trigger and set trigger are present, but like the lock do not function. The trigger guard, butt plate, nose cap and ram rod thimbles are made of brass. All brass hardware exhibits either a medium or dark mustard patina. The barrel and lock have the same dark plum patina. The stock is a medium to dark brown color, and has been striped to give the appearance of curly maple. There is a small brass patch on the left side of the stock, along the barrel channel by the breech of the barrel. Unfortunately the stock is broken in half where the breech plug joins the barrel. There is also a small sliver of wood missing along the left side barrel channel near the muzzle end. With the exception of the wood loss on the left side barrel channel, the barrel channel edges are crisp, and there are no one stress cracks in the stock. This old smoke pole has been around since the early 1800's, been converted to percussion and has managed to survive intact, despite the broken stock.
