This is a Belgian made 10 gauge, double barrel, black powder, percussion shotgun from the mid 1800's. The gun has an overall length of 49 1/2", with the barrels measuring 32 3/8" in length. The London Fine Twist barrels have a smooth exterior, with no pitting. Both the barrels have an even dark plum patina. The bores are just starting to turn dark and have light pitting over the entire length of the barrels. The rib between the barrels is engraved LONDON FINE TWIST. The under side of the barrels several Belgian proofs stamped into them. These are the only stampings on the weapon. The lock plates have no markers stamps, but are very ornately engraved with hunting scenes and have a smooth, steel gray appearance. The hammers match the lock plates in appearance and are heavily engraved with ornate designs. The mechanics work perfectly, locking in half and full cock. They both snap forward when their respective trigger is depressed. The trigger guard and butt plate match the patina of the rest of the gun, with the but plate being slightly darker. The fancy engraving found on the hammers carries over onto the butt plate, trigger guard and nose cap. All the hardware on this shotgun is iron. The ram rod thimbles and nose cap are securely attached. The wooden ram rod is capped with a brass tip and has a worm attached to the opposite end. There are two sling swivels, one in the bottom of the stock comb just behind the trigger guar, the other on the rear ramrod thimble. The stock has a beautiful, medium brown appearance. There are no bumps or dings present in the wood from normal handling. Whoever owned this one really took care of it! There is no wood loss, but there is a shallow crack in the wrist of the stock. I have no history on this old shotgun, but the craftmanship displayed throughout speak for themselves. This will make an excellent addition to any antique firearms collection.
