This is a group of three artifacts recovered on private property in Chesterfield County Virginia, near the site of the Battle of Swift Creek, that took place 9 May, 1864. This is considered to be a battle of the Petersburg Campaign to capture Richmond. Approximately 14000 Union soldiers under the command of Major General Benjamin Butler engaged approximately 4200 Confederate soldiers under the command of General P.G.T. Beauregard. Confederate casualties were combined with Union losses for a total of 990 casualties, either killed, wounded or missing. The outcome of the battle was considered neither a Union or Confederate victory. These three artifacts, a martingale, a copper regimental number plate, and a brass buckle were all recovered on private property. They come in a riker case ready for display!
