Five Excavated Civil War Artifacts Recovered in Hart County, Ky

This is a group of five artifacts recovered on private property in Hart County Kentucky, near the site of the Battle of Rowlett's Station, that took place 17 December, 1861. This is considered to be a battle of the Eastern Kentucky operations to drive the Confederate Army out of the state. Approximately 500 Union soldiers under the command of Brigadier General Alexander M. McCook were engaged by approximately 1350 Confederate soldier under the command of Brigadier General Thomas C. Hindman. During the battle the commander of the 8th Texas Cavalry, Colonel Benjamin Terry, was killed. Confederate casualties were approximately 91 killed, wounded or missing while the Union losses were 40 killed wounded or missing. The outcome of the battle was considered neither a Union or Confederate victory. These five artifacts, an epaulet fastner, a .58 caliber Minie bullet, a button back from a two piece button, a .69 caliber round ball and a flat button were all recovered on private property. They come in a riker case ready for display!
