Excavated Western Military Institute Button Recovered Winchester, Virginia

This is an excavated Western Military Institute button from the Civil War period. This two piece button is coat size and has the letters WMI in an arc, with draped flags and other military symbols in the center on the face, with laurel branches along the edge. The back mark is GEORGETOWN CO, one can only assume it was made by Runyon & Keene of Georgetown, Ky. The face is dent free, no mars or blemishes. The back of the button is undamaged, with the exception of the shank. The majority of the gilt remains on the face of the button, missing from the high points of the laurel branches. The shank is missing, broken off. This button was recovered on private property near where the Battle of Winchester, Virginia occurred.
