This is a Gallagher Carbine from the Civil War period. The 22" barrel has a nice even dark plum patina, with light surface pitting along the entire barrel length. The bore is in good condition, showing strong rifling and scattered areas of light pitting. The breech and have the same dark patina as the barrel, with the right side of the receiver having a slightly lighter patina. The saddle bar and ring are present and show moderate wear. The stock on the Gallagher carbines were made of black walnut, but this one appears to be made of cherry. I am by no means a wood expert, but this stock has a beautiful dark cherry color with great eye appeal. The stock has a couple of dings and nicks from normal use and handling. There are no stress cracks or loss of wood anywhere on the stock. There are no visible cartouches or stamps on the stock. The operating lever, patch box and butt plate are all iron. All the iron hardware has a matching patina on this carbine. The weapon stamps are all crisp, slightly worn in areas, but all very legible. The barrel has no stamps anywhere. The lock is stamped MANUFACTR BY/RICHARDSON & OVERMAN/PHILADA with the serial number of 14004 below that. The Springfield Research Database shows this serial number falling within a range of carbines that was issued to Company A, 4th Tennessee Mounted Infantry (US). The 4th Tn. Mounted Infantry was a late war Union unit that was organized on 29 September, 1864. It was comprised of men from Middle Tennessee counties, the one exception being Company B. They were known as The Union Guards of Tennessee and were from Memphis. They were posted in the Alexandria area of Middle Tennessee and were used to combat guerrilla forces operating in that vicinity. The 4th Tennessee Mounted Infantry Regiment mustered out of service 25 August, 1865 in Nashville, Tennessee. This is a good example of the .50 caliber Gallagher carbine that was issued mostly to Western theater Union Cavalry units, and this one may have been issued to a Tennessee Union Mounted Infantry Regiment. If you collect Civil War carbines, you have to have one of these to complete the collection!
