This is a stag handle knife made in the 1870's - 1890's. The knife has an overall length of 13 1/8" and a blade length of 8 3/4". The handle appears to be made of mule deer horn, which goes along with where this one came from, out west. This piece was picked up in Colorado on the way to a show in Denver a couple years ago. The iron blade is tapered, narrow at the tang and bulbous at the end. It ranges from 1" where it enters the handle to 1 3/8" at the widest point. Only the last 3" of the blade have ever been sharpened. There is a nick on one side of the sharpened edge. Two iron pins through the tang attach the blade to the 1 1/2" diameter horn. The simple blade retains a moderately sharp edge. I can see this one being used to skin and butcher elk, or maybe fend off the occasional big grizzer bear! This is most certainly a mountain man style sticker and would go well in that type of display or collection, especially paired with a .50 caliber Hawkins!
