This is an excavated US Cartridge box plate. The plate does not appear to have been struck, but it does have a bow to it in the center. The lead backing is complete and is not cracked, despite the curve to the plate. The iron loops are both missing, but you can still see the wire itself. The face of the plate has a beautiful chocolate patina. This US cartridge box plate was recovered on private property near the Seven Pines Battlefield. The Battle of Seven Pines took place from 31 May through 1 June, 1862 in Henrico County, Virginia. While neither side could declare a certain victory, several important facts were determined by this battle. It was the largest battle of the eastern campaign to that point, and was the second highest casualty rate for a battle, next to Shiloh. The most crucial point was the wounding of Confederate general Joseph E. Johnston, as it led to the appointment of Robert E. Lee as the commander of the Army of Northern Virginia. This is a nice starter relic for the beginning collector that comes from a battle that likely changed the course of the Civil War.
