This is a set of Civil War era binoculars made by Marchand of Paris, France. The brass body of the binoculars is leather covered. The leather has a well worn, smooth surface and is securely attached to the optical tubes. A section of leather is missing on the top of the right tube assembly, and a little over half of the stitching is broken on the left tube assembly. The glass in these old binoculars is perfect! This isn't a crack, spot, smudge or anything on them, clear as the day they were made. The eye cups are both marked MARCHAND FABt PARIS. When fully extended the bino's are 7" long, retracted they measure 5 1/2" long. The binoculars have a maximum width of 4 3/4". The optics are fantastic with this set. The image is very clear and not distorted or cloudy, and focus perfectly when adjusted. The bottom of the left tube is stamped Day & Night, the right reads U.S. Signal Service. The pasteboard case is well worn, but still very sturdy. The black leather wrap on the case is very much intact around the outside of the case, not so much on the bottom. The carrying strap and the top of the case is missing. These would look great in a Civil War Cavalry, Artillery or officer's display.
