This is a United States Marine Corps officers Mamaluke sword from the late 1960's through 1980. The sword was manufactured in Solingen, Germany and retailed by Hilborn & Hamburger of New York. These swords are designed from the first Mamaluke sword that was presented to Marine 1Lt Presley O'Bannon in recognition of his service in Tripoli in 1805. Marine officers wear the Mamaluke sword with the dress uniform during ceremonial activities and events. The sword has an overall length of 35 1/2", with a blade length of 30". The blade is made from stainless steel and has acid etchings on both sides. The obverse side of the blade has floral etchings, a staff with an American flag showing a canton with the stars arranged in a circle, a military shield with the Marine Corps insignia of the Eagle, Globe and Anchor and the words United States Marines in old English script. The reverse side has the exact same etchings, along with the name of the officer that carried this sword, JAMES R. EVANS JR. that has been jeweler engraved. The blade still retains a mirror like finish. The top of the spine of the blade is engraved USMC SERIAL No 323, and the bottom is engraved GERMANY, where the sword was manufactured. The hilt is made of pearl toned heavy plastic grips and a brass crossed shaped guard. The steel scabbard is chrome plated, with the throat, mounts and drag being gold plated. The sword and scabbard show wear from the expected areas from actual use. The original leather sword knot is still attached to the hilt. I have read where the serial numbered 323 swords went to a lot of Vietnam era marine lieutenants and captains. This one will take a little research to prove that to be the case though, and unfortunately I don't have the time. This sword is correct for any Marine collection or portrayal for the time time of 1968 through 1980.
