This is an excavated Confederate sword tang that still retains the pommel cap and scabbard throat from the Spotsylvania Courthouse battlefield. These pieces of a Confederate sword were recovered back in 1973, and were most recently sold by the Horse Soldier. The tang and scabbard throat show considerable rust and scale. The brass pommel cap shows plenty of ground action, and still retains a small piece of the original wooden grip. Pieces of an old tag with a typed description of the relics still accompanies the pieces. The Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse took place from 8 May through 21 May, 1864, as part of Lieutenant General Grant's Overland Campaign. Spotsylvania proved to be the costliest battle of the campaign, with almost 32,000 combined casualties. I do not know the exact location of this find, but it isn't hard to imagine some Confederate Lieutenant wielding this sword at the Mule Shoe, trying to rally his men for one more onslaught by the Federal Infantry. This would make a great starter piece for your beginning collector.
