This is a 12 gauge shotgun manufactured by the Whitney Arms Company of New Haven, Connecticut. The Whitneyville Armory was located in New Haven from 1798 through 1888, when it was sold to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. This shotgun has an overall length of 48" and a barrel length of 32". The barrel is round and has a dark and rusted bore. The exterior of the barrel, along with all the iron hardware, has untouched patina. The surface is lightly pitted near the bolster area. There are no stamps or any markings on the exterior of the barrel. A simple brass bead serves as the front sight. It appears that this one once had tow ramrod thimbles, but now only has one. The remainder of the iron hardware has a matching patina. The lock is unmarked, and has a round plate that removes to gain access to the internal workings of the lock. The mechanics of the lock work perfectly, locking in both half and full cock. The half stock is in very good condition. There are no cracks, only a small sliver of wood missing at the toe of the butt plate and on top of the stock where it meets the receiver. The edges are crisp and overall there are only a couple of small dings over the entire stock. The only brass piece on the entire shotgun is the nose cap. The wooden ramrod is present. Overall this is a nice example of a hard to find percussion single barrel shotgun from the 1800's.
