This is an unidentified saber bayonet from the mid 1800's. I've had a couple of the "in the know" bayonet guys look at it and they saw it's for a European rolling block rifle. I honestly don't know exactly what it is. The brass hilt has scales, very similar to a Fayetteville saber bayonet, but they don't have the distinct line with each row of scales. It doesn't fit the dimensions for a Fayetteville either. It is very similar to the French Model 1842/59 bayonet, but again it doesn't match exactly. The bayonet is in good condition, but missing the lock and release hardware for the bayonet lug. It measures 25" overall, with a blade length of 20". The blade retains about 10% of the original bright polish, now having a dull steel gray patina. There are some small areas of oxidation scattered over the length of the blade, but nothing that detracts from the appearance of the blade. The edge is free of nicks and dings. The bayonet is free of any stamps or markings, making it all the more difficult to identify it. The brass grip has taken on a light mustard patina. The mortise for the bayonet lug runs from the back of the pommel all the way up to the back of the muzzle ring. The inside diameter of the muzzle ring is .726". As stated earlier, the release mechanism is missing. If anyone can identify this bayonet please give me a call!
