A pair of Cavalry gauntlets from the Civil War period. The gloves are 13" in length, with a 6" cuff. I believe that these are made of angora goat, but I'm not a leather expert. What ever the source, the leather is still very pliable with considerable staining from very heavy use. The stitching has separated slightly on the left glove between the little finger and the ring finger. There is also a period repair along the seam of the left cuff, from one end of the seam to the other. The right glove shows no damage or repairs. The inside of the cuffs and the piping around the top have been dyed red. There are no stamps to indicate size, or a makers mark inside the cuffs. Simple but decorative stitching is on the top, bottom and upper section of the cuff. One the front side of the cuffs, between the rows of stitching, is the outline of a cross on each glove. Along the edge of the back side of both cuffs, written in cursive, is the name R N Owens. Owens is shown on the Civil War database as enlisting as a Private on 1 April, 1863 and mustering into Company M, 9th Alabama Cavalry. They are very well constructed, with the thumb seam and fingers being welted. They are a great set of hard to find Cavalry accoutrements for your Civil War collection.
