This is a United Confederate Veterans artillery kepi circa 1900 - 1920's. The red material has great color and shows absolutely no moth damage. This is a medium size kepi made in the traditional Civil War design. The stitching is very strong throughout this veterans hat. The black visor is in great condition with very little crazing, and is securely attached to the body of the kepi. The leather chin strap is retained by Union General Service buttons. The buttons are so tight I can't make out a back mark. On the front of the kepi is the crossed cannons of artillery made of gold bullion on a black oval background. The inside of the kepi shows honest wear from use. There is a sweatband present, but it is a later replacement. There is a small makers label sewn into the top of the kepi. It is from the A. Shuman Company of Boston, Massachusetts. Abraham Shuman & Company is listed in Bazelon & Mc Guinn's book, "Directory of American Military Good Dealers and Makers 1785-1915" on page 245. The A Shuman & Co was in business from 1877 to 1924 on Washington St in Boston, Massachusetts. There is an ink stamp just below the makers label that reads, "MAYDEN COSTUME CO./286 WASHINGTON ST./BOSTON". This beautiful old veterans hat would display great on a UCV mannequin, especially with an artillery shell jacket!
