This is a US American flag armband used by US Airborne forces during World War II. Paratroopers were dropped behind enemy locations in support of Allied invasions during WWII. They wore these armbands to identify themselves as Americans to the local populace, as well as to the allied land forces moving inland. There were four types of these armbands, used in different theaters. This example is known as the third type. All four types of the armband had a 48 star American flag on it. The third type armband was constructed of heavy paper stock, similar to wall paper, with a 48 star American flag printed onto the white band. The band had punch holes, allowing the wearer to pin it on as a traditional armband, or fold it and pin it to the sleeve. The third types were worn during Operations Overlord, Market Garden and Varsity. There were tow variants of the third type, one with a hemmed edge, and one without. This third type armband, without the hemmed edge, is in very god condition. The colors of the flag are still very vibrant. The armband measures 17" in length, 3 7/8" in width. The punch holes are not distorted, and both original safety pins are with it. There are no tears, rips or holes in the armband. There is some light staining, especially in the areas near the safety pins, but the flag displays great. This would be perfect for an 82nd Division D Day display, 101st or 82nd Market Garden or 17th Airborne Varsity display.
