This is a Federal Military pass that was issued by Headquarters, U. S. Volunteers, Camp Chase, Ohio in 1862. These were required in order for the soldiers to move freely through the area. The pass states that the bearer has leave of absence on indispensable business until a prescribed time of day and date. Atht eh appointed time and day the soldier was required to surrender the pass to the Filed Officer of the Day and report to his proper quarters for duty, or be considered a deserter. A small note printed on the edge of the pass reads, " Tickets to Field Officers require approval by the Governor." This is an unusual little document to run across, and they don't turn up very often. This small document comes in a wooden frame measuring 8 1/4" wide and 6 1/4" tall.
