This book was written by Jim Dan Hill, published in 1976, the narrative is 205 pages and is illustrated with black and white illustrations. The sketches which Charles Stedman left to posterity provide an intimate and firsthand glimpse of life in the Civil War Navy. A talented artist, Stedman was also an astute observer of events and people. The smell of salt spray and tar in the rigging, the oppresive darkness and heat below decks in a monitor, the rumbling roar of ship's guns firing at Fort Sumter, the tingling excitement of a cruiser chasing a blockade runner, the pathos and humor of the Navy's last official ration issue of grog, all can be found in Stedman's drawings. His sketchbook and letters provide one of the few personal accounts of the Navy in the Civil War. This hard back book is in good condition, with a dust cover in fair condition.
