This is a Grand Army of the Republic kepi manufactured circa 1870's - 1890's. The kepi is made of blue wool and is machine sewn. There is some moth damage on the left side and at the top on the back side. It has a printed markers label that is heavily worn. The only thing still legible is the location of the vendor, Baltimore. There is no size tag, but the kepi appears to be about a size 7. The stitching is strong and unbroken. The black tarred visor is barely attached to the body of the kepi, being held on only by the left corner, yet it is in very good condition. The buttons are US General Service of the two piece design and are tightly sewn on. There is no back mark on the buttons. A bullion laurel wreath has the letters H.S.C. floating at the top of the wreath, and the letter H in the center. The H.S.C. represents the Horatio Seymour Cavalry and the letter H is for company H, the Halleck Guards recruited from New York City. The regiment was named after the Governor of New York. It was eventually folded into what became the 13th New York Cavalry Regiment. The chin strap is made of gold bullion, and is more decorative than functional. The brown leather sweatband shows honest wear and is securely attached. The liner is a dark colored polished cotton material and is also securely stitched in place. This GAR kepi shows some wear and some damage from lack of proper storage, but with a little TLC could be a very nice addition to your GAR collection.
