This book is part of a ten volume series on the Civil War that was edited by Francis Trevelyan Miller, published in 1912, the narrative is 322 pages and is illustrated with black and white photos. This is Volume Six, The Navies that was written by James Barnes, with the introduction by French E. Chadwick, a Rear Admiral in the United States Navy. The series was initially published in 1911, the 50th anniversary of the start of the Civil War. The set contains thousands of scenes photographed between 1816 and 1865. This volume concentrates on the Federal and Confederate navies. Beginning with the Federal navy and the blockade, this volume covers the organization of both navies, the first expeditions of the Federal Navy and the blockade. Then it transitions to the development of the first ironclads and the famous battle between the USS Monitor and the CSS Merrimac. It covers the "brown water" navy and fighting on the Mississippi River, actions involving forts and shore batteries and winds up with the Confederate blockade runners, most notably the Alabama. All of the photographs in this volume are made during the war, unless otherwise indicated. This hard back book is in good condition, but does not have a dust cover.
