This book was written by Curt Anders, published in 1994, the narrative is 619 pages and is illustrated with black and white drawings and maps. Hearts in Conflict is the only in depth one volume history of the Civil War addressed to non scholars. Here the complex realities behind such names as Lee and Meade, Fredericksburg and Gettysburg, become immediately graspable, and not an iota of drama is lost in the process. Author Curt Anders focuses on the war's crucial battles, delineating the positions and movements of armies with an unfailing clarity heightened by easy to follow maps. He keeps the reader aware of the many factors that shaped the course of each battle, terrain, weather, supply, morale, the limits of human endurance, but always finds the main determinant in the generals, the degree of energy, skill, imagination and sheer nerve possessed by each. Throughout the text, Anders allows the generals, and countless other actors in our antional tragedy, to speak for themselves. We hear Longstreet warning Lee at Gettysburg, " I have been a soldier all my life, and it is my opinion that no 15,000 men ever arrayed for battle can take that position." And Lee after the debacle, "It's all my fault. I thought my men were invincible." A remarkable distillation of the war both as deadly strategic game and testing ground for human personalities, Hearts in Conflict is clearly destined to become a classic work on nineteenth century American history. This paper back book is in good condition.
