This is a martingale for a US Mounted Officer from the World War I era. The heart shaped martingale is made of brass and is 5 1/4" tall and 5 1/4" at the widest point. The crossed rifles insignia of the Infantry branch are soldered onto the front of the martingale. The brass has a nice chocolate patina. All the mounting hooks are still securely soldered in place. There is an opening in the center of the heart that is 2 1/4" x 2 1/4". I believe that this was intended to be used as a picture frame more than an actual piece of horse equipment. Either way, it is a very unique piece of US WWI history, and will look great in your WWI US Infantry collection.
