This is a Model 1894 Winchester rifle chambered in 32 Winchester Special. The Model 1894 was the first Winchester lever action gun made for smokeless powder cartridges. The Model 94 was designed by John Browning, and is decidedly the most successful centerfire rifle that Winchester has ever produced. Since 1894 there have been over 7,500,00 produced. This Model 1894 Winchester is serial number 171627, putting it in a production year of 1899. The rifle measure 44" overall, with a 26" round barrel. The barrel and magazine tube still retain quite a bit of the bluing, while the receiver, lever, hammer and butt plate all have a matching steel gray patina. The bore is bright and shows good rifling still. The barrel has several stamps, 32 W S is stamped near the breech, with the Winchester proof mark just in front of it. Forward of the rear sight on the top the barrel is stamped MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./----NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A. PAT. AUG. 21, 1894----. There is also a stamp on the right side of the barrel, but I can't find it listed anywhere. It looks to be individual stamps, not rolled. The best I can make out, it reads #6B 63 O W 0 00. Research for someone else down the line! The tang of the receiver is stamped in three lines, Model 1894/-WINCHESTER-/PAT. AUG. 21. 1894. The crescent shaped steel butt plate fits the stock like a glove, and matches the remainder of the case hardened hardware in appearance. The exact same hold true for the steel nose cap. The walnut stock is in very good condition, with no stress cracks or wood loss anywhere. The barrel channel edges show wear from handling, but are still very crisp. The mechanics of this old Winchester operate flawlessly. Pretty sure this old Winchester centerfire lever gun will still put some lead down range! This Model 1894 Winchester will definitely add to your wild west collection, and not break the bank doing it!
