Two .58 Caliber Three Ring Bullets Recovered at Baton Rouge, La.

This is a set of two bullets recovered on private property in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, site of a naval and ground battle that took place 5 August, 1862. The battle took place between a reinforced Union brigade of six regiments of infantry commanded by Brigadier General Thomas Williams and a reinforced brigade of Confederate soldiers commanded by Major General John C. Breckinridge. The morning of the 5th saw the Union forces in the center of Baton Rouge, while the Confederate forces were on the northern outskirts of town. Initially the Confederates drove the Union forces all the way across town, where they withdrew to prepared defensive lines near the Penitentiary. Union gunboats provided support for the infantry, forcing Breckinridge to withdraw. The Union forces suffered 371 men killed, wounded or missing, while the Confederate casualties were 478 killed wounded or missing. This battle was considered a Union victory. These two .58 caliber bullets are in dropped condition and were recovered on private property.
