This is a full stock Pennsylvania long rifle manufactured by Henry Leman, a Pennsylvania gunsmith. This percussion rifle measures 59 1/2" in length with a 43" octagon barrel. The barrel has a dark plum patina and has a smooth, pit free exterior, and is retained by iron keys. The bore is .42 caliber and is dark, but is not pitted. The rear buck horn style sight is dovetailed into the barrel 9 1/2" forward of the breech. The front sight is a German silver blade design, also dovetailed into the barrel. There are no visible stamps or markings on the barrel, but it has not been removed from the stock. The three ramrod thimbles ares securely attached to the stock using iron pins. The barrel has an extra long tang requiring two screws. The lockplate is marked with the name LEMAN/LANCTR.PA, with a turkey forward of the stamp and a simple floral design rearward of it. The mechanics of the lock work, but the long screw for the lock is missing. It has been converted from flint to percussion using the drum in barrel technique. The trigger and set trigger function perfectly. The trigger guard, nose cap and butt plate are made of iron, the ram rod is wood and the ram rod thimbles made of brass. The barrel, lock, trigger guard, nose cap and butt plate have the same dark plum patina, the ramrod thimbles all have a matching dark mustard patina. The stock is a medium brown color. There are no noticeable areas of wood loss, but there is a large brass patch on the stock opposite the lock. There is also a crack extending from the rear of the brass into the wrist area. The patch is held in place by small iron nails. There is a small check rest on the left side of the stock. The barrel channel and ram rod channel edges are crisp. This long rifle came into the shop recently along with an 1800's camp hatchet from the local area. All this one needs is a lock screw, and a new home!
