Time Life published an eighteen book series on the Civil War using first hand accounts, diaries, documents and photographs to bring to life the Civil war from the perspective of the combatants as well as the civilians caught in these horrific battles. Here is the story of the Second Battle of Bull Run, or Second Manassas, sight of the first major engagement of the Civil War. Union General John Pope, commanding the Union Army of Virginia, was engaged with two Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia from 28 - 30 August, 1862 at the site of the First Manassas battlefield. Pope believed he was engaged with Stonewall Jackson's Corps only, unaware that the other Corp of James Longstreet had taken the field. The battle ended when Longstreet's Corps counter attacked and cruched the Union left flank. The Union army was forced to retreat to Centreville, Virginia. Union casualties were 14,462, while the Confederates suffered 7,298. This hard back book is in excellent condition, and the dust jacket is in very good condition.
