Excavated Relics From Rockingham County Virginia

This is a group of relics recovered on private property near the Port Republic Battlefield in Rockingham County, Virginia. There are twenty one bullets, mostly shot .58 caliber three ringers. a couple of dropped three ringers, an Enfield hammer, a worm, a roller buckle, possibly from a saddle and the back of a two piece button. The relics come in an attractive wooden display case lined with black felt. The case measures 12" wide, 9" tall and 1 3/4" deep. On 9 June, 1862, approximately 3500 Union soldiers under the command of Brigadier General Erastus Tyler, met 6000 Confederate soldiers under the command of Major General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson at Port Republic, Virginia. The battle was a decisive Confederate victory in Jackson's Valley Campaign. Union casualties were 1002 wounded, killed or missing, while the Confederates suffered 816 casualties. This is a very nice group of dug relics representative of the Shenandoah Valley Campaign conducted by Stonewall Jackson in 1862.
