This book was written by Ransom Hundley, published in 1990, the narrative is 278 pages and is not illustrated. A fast paced novel of the Civil War, Blind Legacy traces a southern farm family's exploits from the late 1850's to 1863. The large Hawkins family of Western North Carolina and Southwest Virginia approaches the impending hostilities with both excitement and dread. The realities of war, with it's death and destruction, soon curb the enthusiastic volunteers, with depravities and deprivations both in the field and on the home front. Extremely well researched by the author, the topography and geography are properly interpreted, the battle scenes are graphically described, and the end results are viewed realistically. What really gives the twenty eight chapters life is the author's insight into the key family members' hopes, fears, and actions, whether they be soldiers or civilians. The teenage recruits soon become hardened veterans, and along with their older relatives likewise serving in the ranks of the Confederacy, face disease, boredom, maiming and death. This hard back book is in very good condition, with a dust jacket that is also in very good condition.
