Your True Marcus, the Civil War letters of a Jewish Colonel, is a compilation of letters written by Marcus Spiegel during the Civil War. Spiegel was a Jewish immigrant from Germany that settled in Ohio in 1849. He married a local Quaker girl and settled down to raise a family. When the Civil War broke out, Marcus Spiegel identified so much with his new country that he enlisted in the Union army. He rose from the rank of Captain to Colonel in 2 1/2" years of service. Spigel saw action in Virginia and Mississippi. As a Colonel, he commanded the 120th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. His letters home cover a variety of subjects, from camp life and battles, other officers, battle strategy, and meeting with other Jews in the South. His letters are significant additions to eyewitness accounts of the Civil War. They are also a powerful account of the history of minority ethnic groups in nineteenth century America. This hard back book is in very good condition, with a dust jacket in good condition.
