This is a .38 caliber long rimfire cartridge from the post Civil War era. The copper cased cartridge is head stamped with the raised letters US in a recessed circle in the center of the case. This was first produced by The United States Cartridge Company in 1869. The company was founded by General Benjamin Butler and based in Lowell, Massachusetts. In 1926 the company was taken over by Winchester. The case length is .888" with a projectile diameter of .375", with an overall length of 1.347". The projectile, a round nose, has an aged, light gray patina to it. The copper case has a beautiful bronze patina. There aren't a whole lot of these rimfire cartridges with the US head stamp floating around out there. If you have an ammunition collection, this one needs to be in it!
