This is an excavated scabbard throat that was recovered in New Kent County, Virginia. The throat is made of brass and measures 2 3/4" wide, 1 3/8" tall and has a throat opening of 2 3/16". I picked this up along with a few other dug pieces from Virginia, and at first glance thought it was the throat from a Model 1832 Artillery short sword scabbard. After taking the measurements, there's no way it was from a short sword scabbard. Those blades are only 1 3/4" wide, the thing would have fell out of the scabbard! I suspect this is the brass throat out of a leather bowie knife scabbard. I've had quite a few of them with blade widths of well over 2" wide. This one was riveted to the scabbard. It was recovered in an area that saw plenty of Civil War fighting during McClellan's Peninsula Campaign in 1862. Location of the recovery will be disclosed to the buyer. If you have an excavated collection this piece will fit right in.
