This is a Grand Army of the Republic kepi manufactured circa 1870's. The kepi is made of blue wool and is machine sewn. The color of the kepi, however, is almost gray. This one has spent a lot of time in the sun, with the only blue showing in the folds of the material. It has no markers label or size tag, but appears to be about a size 7. The stitching is strong and unbroken. The black tarred visor is securely attached to the body of the kepi. The visor is in very good condition. The buttons and chin strap are missing from the kepi. The gold laurel wreath is sewn onto a dark blue backing that is sewn to the kepi. In the center of the wreath is the number 140, also in bullion. The 140th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment was formed 13 September, 1862 and served the remainder of the war. This was a hard fought regiment that saw action in all the major eastern theater campaigns and battles. The brown leather sweatband shows a ton of wear and is hand stitched. Approximately 25% of the stitching is broken, mainly on the right side. The liner is of the drawstring type and is heavily stained from wear. There is no moth damage on the kepi. This is a pattern 1872 kepi that some Grand Army of the Republic used for his GAR reunions and encampments. There is no way of knowing which soldier this belonged to. While it needs a little love, it still displays well!
