This is a hand written record of the Civil War and Grand Army of the Republic achievements of Frank Atherton Cargill. The document is mounted on a piece of cardboard for support. It measures 16" wide and 20" tall. It has been written in Old English script and appears to be on a piece of leather. Frank Cargill had enlisted as a Private at the age of 14, and was mustered in as a substitute in Company G of the 6th New Hampshire Infantry on 6 June, 1864. Records show that he was wounded at Petersburg, Virginia on 7 July, 1864, barely a month after he enlisted. Private Cargill was mustered out of the service with his unit on 17 July, 1865 at Alexandria, Virginia. Cargill went on to become a doctor and settled in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Dr. Cargill was active in the Grand Army of the Republic, and was the Department of Connecticut Commander in 1930. He died 2 March, 1932 at the age of 83. The top half of the document pertains to his Civil War service, and has a spread wing eagle, his name in a banner and a drawing of Cargill when he was a Union Private. The text reads "FRANK ATHERTON CARGILL Enlisted at the age fourteen yr's-officiall recorded eighteen-immediately transferred to the fireing line and consigned: Company G, Sixth Regiment New Hampshire Vol. Infty. 2nd Brig: 2nd Div. 9th Corps Gen. Burnside Army of the Potomac. Gen U.S. Grant Comdg. Participated in the maneuvers and engagements of the 9th Corps up to Appomattox. The 6th Reg. was classed by Fox as of the 400 most efficient fighting regiments of the 2000 regiments of the Civil War. With the 6th greeted Abraham Lincoln in the siege line before Petersburg, Va. April 2nd, 1865. Discharged July 17-1865. Height on enlistment 5ft. 1 3/4in: on discharge 6ft." The lower section contains his GAR achievements, along with a drawing of him in later years in his GAR attire, set within a GAR medallion. The text reads "GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC Mustered into Admiral Foote Post No. 17 Dep of Conn. New Haven. May 3, 1871: Adj. and Surg of Post 17: Comdr A.G. Warner Post 54. Putnam for 3yr's: Comdr Palmer Post 33, Mutered for 3 yrs. Surg. Gen. Dep. Ct. 1907. Comdr C.Y. Powers Post 391 Rochester, N.Y. 3 yrs. Pres. Monroe County N.Y. Civil War Vet's Assn. 1917. Pres. Mem. and Ex. Com. Monroe Co. N.Y. 1923. A.D.C. Staff Comr. in Chief: 5 appointments. Patriotic Instructor, Dep. of Conn. 1927: Jr. Vice Comr. 1928: Sr. Vice. Dep. Comdr. 1929: Dep. Comdr. 1930: Pres. Conn. Army and Navy Club 1929. A great grand-son of Captain Benjamin Cargill of the Continental Army, a member of the Son of the American Revolution of Conn. March 21st 1931.
