This book was written by Virgil Carrington Jones, published in 1962, the narrative is 338 pages and is illustrated with black and white photos and drawings. The Final Effort, the third in a three volume work entitled The Civil War At Sea, covers the final period of the Civil War from July, 1863, to November, 1865. It begins with the South's premonition of disaster in July 1863, when the Union closed the Mississippi River and split the COnfederacy in tow, and ends with the sailing of the C.S.S. Shenandoah to England, six months after Lee's surrender. Mr. Jones presents both the major naval and the little known and almost unbelievable attempts by both sides to grasp victory at sea. The curious Northern naval foray in Texas, the Battle of Sabine Pass, the Union fleet's near disaster in the Red River, the capture of the U.S.S. Water Witch, the sinking of the C.S.S. Alabama, all are vividly recreated by this noted historian. This book is volume three of a three book set. This hard book is in very good, used condition, with a dust cover in good condition.
