This is a brass cartridge belt buckle patented by Anson Mills on 1 February, 1881. This style of buckle was used with the woven cartridge belts of the 1870's-1890's. The H pattern buckle measures 2 15/16" wide and 3 1/4" high. Inside the recessed oval on the front of the buckle is a rectangular block with the words OLD RELIABLE inset. While some associate this with the 9th Infantry Division, nicknamed the Old Reliables, it actually refers to the Sharps buffalo rifles that had Old Reliable stamped on the top of the barrel. The brass buckle has taken on a beautiful dark aged patina that only time can provide. The back of the buckle is stamped ANSON MILLS, PAT. FEB 1. 1881/T.C. ORNDORFF SOLE MANF./WORCESTER MASS/U.S.A. This buckle would look great displayed with the Sharps Old Reliable rifle listed on the website!
