This is a percussion, half stock, heavy barreled plains rifle from the mid 1800's. It has an overall length of 49", with a barrel length of 32 3/4". The brown octagon barrel and case hardened lock have no visible markings or stamps. The bore is .54 caliber and is dark with light pitting, the rifling is all but gone. The lockplate has no stamps or markings of any kind. The barrel is retained by two iron pins, made from square nails, and one tang screw. The ramrod pipes are secured to the stock by pins also. The wooden ramrod is brass tipped on one end and has a metal cap with a threaded rod on the other end. The rear sight is a simple buck horn type. The front sight is a pinched type and dove tailed into the barrel. The mechanics of the lock work fine. The use of the set trigger makes the primary trigger very touchy! The butt plate, trigger guard, ramrod thimbles, side plate, nose cap and patch box are brass. The nose cap and possibly the side plate are replacement pieces. Inside the patchbox was a US stamped bullet puller, or worm. The stock is in fair condition, showing a loss of wood at the rear of the lock. There are a couple of small stress cracks in the stock also, none long than 1" This old mountain man rifle has had some work done to it recently, there is shiny metal on the lock by the nipple drum. A couple of the screws are modern replacements also. I believe this is a Lancaster style rifle from the Pennsylvania or Ohio area. While I don't think I'd shoot this one, it does make an attractive wall hanger, and as such is priced accordingly. This rifle came out of the Ben Michele collection.
