This is a utility box for a Samurai warrior from the Edo period. These small wooden boxes were used to carry repair parts for the Samurai's weapons and armor among other things. This one is 15 1/2" wide, 4 1/2" tall and 4" deep. A black lacquer has been applied to the entire box, inside and out. Painted on the top of the box are two gold origami birds and a flower withing a circle, I believe that is the family crest. The box has a small tray on top, and a larger storage area below. The tray is suited to hold the smaller sword and armor parts and tools. The larger section below is made for the bigger pieces of armor and sword parts. This one has a couple of small sword pieces and tiny throats for the decorative cords. The bottom section has two smaller boxes in it. One has a decorative piece of brass for armor or a helmet, the other has small wooden shafts in it. There are a couple of tools and a wooden sword handle wrapped in marine skin. Rounding out the inventory are two very small brass kettles, one with a top and one without. The box is in over all good condition, with some chipped ares of lacquer and small gouges in the soft wood. There appear to be a couple of modern repairs in the joint areas with wood glue. It doesn't hurt the appearance of the box. mentioned for accuracy. This Edo period utility box would add some great display power to your Samurai collection.
