This is a percussion, half stock, hexagonal barreled target rifle from the mid 1800's time period. It has an overall length of 48", with a barrel length of 32 1/2". The patina of the iron hardware matches the barrel perfectly. The bore gages out at .45 caliber and is still pretty bright with no pitting. There appears to be no rifling left in the barrel. The barrel has no stamps, has a bright finish and has virtually no pitting. The barrel is retained by a single escutcheon pin and one tang screw. The lockplate is also stmp free and matches the patina of the barrel perfectly. The brass ramrod pipes are secured to the bottom of the barrel. The wooden ramrod is brass tipped on one end and has a worm attached to the other end. The rear sight is a simple buckhorn style dovetailed into the barrel and set forward of the breech almost 6". The front sight is brass blade sight also dovetailed into the barrel. The mechanics of the lock work, but will not hold at full cock. The butt plate and trigger guard are brass. The stock is in good condition, showing only a couple of small dings from normal handling. There are no cracks or wood loss anywhere in the wood. A brass nose cap is used on the end of the stock. This is a nice example of mid 1800's craftsmanship used in the making of an early percussion rifle.
