This is a first hand account concerning the notorious Confederate prison camp in Andersonville, Georgia written by John McElroy. This book was published in 1957, the narrative is 297 pages and is illustrated with drawings done by the author. Based on McElroy's first hand experiences, the author's work tells the heartbreaking story of the notorious Georgia prison where 50,000 Northern soldiers suffered, and 14,000 died. The author was a printer, soldier, journalist and author, most known for writing the novel The Red Acorn and the four volume series Andersonville: A story of Rebel Military Prisons. These are based upon McElroy's lengthy confinement in the Confederate Andersonville prison camp during the Civil War. John McElroy was a Private in Company L, 16th Illinois Cavalry when he was captured during the winter of 1862.
