This is small book that describes the history of the Orton Plantation near Wilmington, North Carolina researched and written by James Laurence Sprunt. It documents the historic plantation in the Smithville Township of Brunswick County, North Carolina. The plantation is located along the Cape Fear river between Wilmington and Southport. The plantation is considered be a perfect example of southern antebellum architecture. Built in 1735, Orton Plantation house is one of the oldest structures in Brunswick County. During it's storied history the plantation has been attacked by Native Americans, been used as a military hospital during the Civil War, and been home to lawyers, physicians, military leaders and a Colonial Governor. The book is illustrated with black and white photographs and sketched maps.
