This book, along with two companion volumes, Two Naval Journals:1864 and Miss Waring's Journal:1863 and 1865, commemorates the role of Mobile, Alabama in the Civil War. The book brings together a number of unpublished letters and excerpts form several notable, unpublished diaries. Important wartime journals such as Freemantle's Russell's and Cumming's, originally published in the 1860's, have been drawn on to amplify Mobile's story. The book is organized chronologically. Major happenings in other theaters are noted to place Mobile in the general context of the war.
