This is a United Confederate Veterans hat from the early 1900's with Texas association. Since this veteran was from Texas the hat is naturally a Stetson! This one is an early 1900's "Boss of the Plains" version from John B Stetson, premier hat maker for the American west! The hat has a 3" brim and a 4" crown. The brown leather sweat band is 2" wide and shows moderate staining from wear. The right side of the band has a gold embossed logo of the Lindstrom Hat Company of California, a haberdashery established in 1884. The left side of the sweat band is embossed with the gold John B. Stetson Company No. 1 Quality logo. Both of the logo's are very legible. The little ribbon tie in the back of the hat is still present and also shows moderate wear. The Stetson block tag and duplication tag behind the sweatband are both present and legible. The one inch wide hat band with bow is still reporting for duty, the bow being a little frayed on the back side. A cavalry hat cord has been added, along with a brass number one and a cuff sized five pointed star button. Both the number and button are secured by small leather thongs. The only thing I don't have is the name of the veteran. Apparently he served with the First Texas Cavalry Regiment, CSA. This unit mustered into service 15 April, 1861. Many of the members of the unit were former Texas Rangers before the war. Colonel Henry McCulloch formed the unit and was it's first commanding officer. The regiment was involved in only a couple of battles, one under the command of then Colonel Earl Van Dorn at a place called Adams Hill, Texas on 9 May, 1861. One company was also involved in a small skirmish with a band of Native Americans on the Peosi River, near San Antonio, on 1 November, 1861. The cavalrymen killed 10 of the band and wounded the remaining two. In April 1862 the regiment was reduced to a five company battalion and renamed Eighth Cavalry Battalion. The front and rear of the brim have a couple of small rough spots, nothing major. This one displays like a million dollars, and is an absolute must if you are a UCV or Texas collector!
