This is a book about the Battle of Gettysburg written by a Charles Carleton Coffin, an American war correspondent for the Boston Journal. Most are unfamiliar with him, but those who know of his work compare him to Ernie Pyle of WWII. Coffin related well with officer's and soldiers, as well as the civilians caught in the paths of the opposing armies. His detailed, graphic accounts of the major battles of the Civil War offer an important glimpse into life and death at the battle front. This work contains an essay on Coffin written by John W. Schildt, a well known author of the Civil War. An appendix is included that makes the reading easier to follow. The book is filled with personal accounts of soldiers on the field of battle, often taken while the smoke was still clearing. Black and white illustrations and maps abound in the text. This is a very well written account of the bloodiest three days in American military history, by one of the premier war correspondents of his time.
