This is a cast iron stirrup from the mid 1800's. They are commonly associated with southern plantation saddles and are sometimes believed to be Confederate used during the Civil War. This stirrup could very possibly have seen use during the Civil War. These type stirrups were found on plantation saddles that were sometimes pressed into service during the early war years. I have seen several artillery saddles with this type stirrup. This one measures 5" tall, 4 5/8" wide and has a tread width of 1 7/8". The stirrup has a dark, aged patina with slight surface rust. There are a couple of spots that still show the nickel plating it once had. This was found in an old log cabin in West Tennessee.
