This is a set of cast iron stirrups from the early to mid 1800's. They are commonly associated with southern plantation saddles and are sometimes believed to be Confederate used during the Civil War. This set could very possibly have seen use during the Civil War. These type stirrups were found on plantation saddles that were sometimes pressed into service during the early war years. I have seen several artillery saddles with this type stirrup. This set measures 5" tall, 4 1/2" wide and have a tread width of 1 3/4". The stirrups have a dark, aged patina with slight surface rust. Remnants of heavy 1" wide leather stirrups straps with roller buckles are still on this set. These were found in an old log cabin in West Tennessee.
