This is an excavated Union General Service button that came into the shop recently from a local relic hunter. The button was recovered in Prince William County, Virginia near the site of the Battle of Blackburn's Ford. This small action took place on 18 July, 1861 when Union forces under the command of BG Irvin McDowell attempted to cross Bull Run creek in a probing action to locate the Confederate left flank. He was repulsed by the Confederate brigade commanded by BG James Longstreet. This is a Union General Service button with a SCOVILL MFG CO Waterbury back mark. It is of two piece construction and has a shank. The button is free of damage and the shank is still standing straight. It has achieved an absolute beautiful chocolate brown patina. This button would make a great piece for the beginning collector in your family!
