This is a set of World War I era binoculars made by G Rathgen of Bremen, Germany. The brass body of the binoculars is leather covered. The leather has a well worn, smooth surface and is securely attached to the optical tubes. A section of leather is missing on the bottom of the left tube assembly, and a little over half of the stitching is broken on the right tube assembly. The glass in these old binoculars is perfect! This isn't a crack, spot, smudge or anything on them, clear as the day they were made. The eye cups are both marked G Rathgen Bremen in old gold print. When fully extended the bino's are 5 3/4" long, retracted they measure 4" long. The binoculars have a maximum width of 4 3/4". The optics are fantastic with this set. The image is very clear and not distorted or cloudy. The leather case is almost worn out. Even with the binoculars removed it still looks as if they are in it. The black leather still retains the majority of the color, but the front is pretty worn. There is a carrying strap on the top of the case, but it is broken in the center. The top of case is attached by two small brass hinges. I believe these binoculars to be manufactured around 1910. These would look great in a WWI German officer's display.
