This is a Model 1902 "Bell" cap used by the US Army prior to the outbreak of WWI. The hat, constructed of blue wool material with black leather visor is in excellent condition. The wool has no damage of any type and retains a vibrant blue color. There are four black vet rivets in the crown that are all still in place. The black leather chin strap normally found on these hats has been replaced by a M1895 officer's gold bullion chin strap secured by two general service eagle buttons. The black visor is securely attached to the hat. The green band that encircles the base of the cap is missing, and looks to have never been there. Sewn to the front of the hat is a gold bullion wreath. Within the wreath in sliver bullion is the number 57 over the letters SV. The 57th New York Volunteer Infantry regiment is best known for it's hard fighting during the Civil War. The hat is lined with polished cotton and has a brown leather sweat band. The lining is completely intact, as well as the sweat band. The makers label is present and very legible. A circle of gold ink has the blue lettering that reads "SPRINGFIELD HAT & CAP CO./SPRINGFIELD MASS. This company is listed in the Good, makers and Dealers book as having their factory in Springfield, Massachusetts and their sales room at 101 42nd St, New York City. They are listed as being a late 19th century firm. I believe that an old veteran of the 57th New York had this hat made to his specifications and purchased it from the sales store in New York.
