Late 1800's Illinois State Militia Uniform
Item #: AA1546
This is an 1880's - 1890's dress tunic from the Illinois state militia/guard. The gray wool material this tunic is made of marks the end of this style uniform, as the Army went to the khaki colored uniforms in the late 1890's. The single breasted coatee has three rows of nine Illinois state seal buttons on the front, and ten on the tails. All buttons have the back mark of 10 five point stars except two. The two seem to be replacement buttons, one is from the Scovill MFG Co of Waterbury and the other is from the Work Bro's of Chicago. The body of the coat is made in the style of a military coatee. The tails are not hemmed and lined in black, each tail having a pocket. The gray wool color is still very vibrant. The front of the tunic has been embellished with 9 rows of worsted braid. The braid, along with the collar, cuff tabs and tails are black in color with gold trim. There is no rank or insignia on the uniform. There is an epaulette on each shoulder, also black. The tunic is fully lined, to include the sleeves. There are a couple of stains on the lining, showing this one did get worn! There are a couple of moth holes, but no major damage on the coatee. It is missing one button on the left side of the collar and one from the back. The trousers have a black stripe running from wait all the way down to the cuff. There are six unmarked tin buttons around the waist for suspenders. There are no belt loops present. A small adjustment belt is attached to the back of the trousers. There are two front pocket and one rear pocket on the right side. Ink stamped on the pockets is the name F.S. Chase. Also written on one of the front pockets in brown ink are the numbers 9805. The waist is lined in blue and white tick material. There are no moth holes in the pants. but several small areas where the material is thread bare. This uniform displays great on a mannequin!
