This is a print of Confederate General Robert E Lee done by artist John A Elder of Fredericksburg, Virginia. The original print was done done by this former Confederate soldier in 1866. It measures 17" wide and 20" tall. The gold and black frame measures 20 1/4" wide and 25 3/4" tall. The print is single matted in off white. There is a small stain at the very bottom of the mat, likely caused by water damage. The print displays very well despite the staining on the mat. Elder's painting depicts Lee standing with his arms crossed in front of him. He is dressed in a double breasted frock coat and wears a gold belt with two piece buckle over a General Officer's sash. Behind the General to this left is a black hat resting atop a Chief Engineer's of the Army of Northern Virginia's map. On the right is his very ornate sword. Even after the war Lee still worn the rank of Colonel on his uniform, the rank he wore throughout the war. John Elder went on to paint many Civil War prints, but this is probably his most recognizable.
